Men in regional areas of NSW and Australia wide often suffer significantly higher mental health distress. There are a number of factors such as diancnes with difficulties farming, flood, drought and increased risk of completed deaths by suicide.
Most men (especially regionally, such as the Riverina) can struggle to open up and speak up due to challenges they faced, as well as stigma and culture. This often leads to feelings of worthlessness and weakness.
This means that it is so imperative to reach out and work with others when things become too much and distressing. This could be grief and loss, trauma work or improving self-esteem and overall mood.
Connecting with others early and even working with a male therapist can help with both breaking down stigma and getting early intervention. This may potentially stop things becoming even more difficult or problematic down the track.
